How You Can Help

This ride requires more than just money to succeed.   It requires you!

Host Meredith and Apollo for a night

Four years on the road means about 1,400 nights of needing a safe place to rest.
We carry everything we need, except a patch of ground to sleep on.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to be a helpful host.

  1. Great slogan, super cause, all the best for you, Apollo and all of us that are riding with you in spirit.

  2. Wow!! Good luck and best wishes. Hope you manage to keep a good record of the journey. And please keep a list of things you started off thinking were essential/needed but after weeks or months you decide you can actually do without; and one day share it. I had to cut right down and when I could have added stuff again I absolutely didnt. But I was not doing anything too tough. Go safely. Peace

  3. Hi my name is Angela and I'm planning a similar ride. Except I'm starting from East coast and doing a ocean to ocean to ocean trek. Lol I'm a bit chicken I'm going to use a pack horse.
I'm starting my ride in October 2017. The reason I started this comment is to give you a name of a gentleman that might be able to help with your trek. Val Geissler (307) 587-4412. He is a cowboy gentleman in Wyoming that has a lot of contacts.

    1. Good luck with that Angela, and be sure to keep me posted on your progress! Maybe we'll cross paths some time, that would be fun :)

  4. Just signed up for your email. I’m in NC and not sure if you will come close to where I’m at. I’m in Pittsboro, near Raleigh and Chapel Hill. When you’re here, I’ve got a place for you and your horse, I’m a good cook too. Let me know how else I can help when you’re here.

    1. Thank you! I will be in that area in 2019. Can you email me at so I have your contact info for when I get closer?

  5. I've been following your journey now and then from your website and glad to see such an endeavor, as travel by horse can be a most unique and rewarding journey. I am wholly behind travel by horse, as long as the horse's well-being is the prime consideration. I'm not on your route, so can't help there, but I wonder: since you are only traveling about 12 miles a day on average, as you've indicated, and are carrying quite a bit of gear as well as your cat, and are mostly walking yourself anyway, why not get a proper pack saddle so the weight can be distributed evenly and Apollo could be more comfortable. Most people traveling as far and as long as you are would have a pack horse or a support vehicle following, especially if carrying a pet and anything but the most minimal gear. Apollo could be your pack horse as well as your companion and your journey would not be diminished by walking alongside him. In fact, it would be enhanced as you would likely have a happier horse with less chance of saddle sores or sore back. Moreover, you have more capacity to carry the feed your horse needs for continuous travel. Why take the chance? Why jeopardize your beautiful journey? A happy horse will ensure a happy journey. Good luck to you both. Apollo seems like a very neat horse. I offer this as a cross-country horse traveler myself, a long way, a long time ago.

    1. Thanks for asking. I have considered getting a second horse so one could pack and the other ride, but every time I’ve thought about it, I’ve come to the same conclusion that it would not be as safe. The reason is, unlike most cross country rides, I am traveling along major roads. I know that if there was ever a time (and there have been several so far) when my horse spooks or is at risk of spooking, I wouldn’t want to have two spooking horses to keep safe from traffic. Plus, since I rely on the kindness of strangers for pasture, and sometimes trailering, I would not want to impose with an additional horse - there have been many many times when they can only help because I have one horse, but two would have been outside their means/space/etc. This year Hermès is staying at home and I have lightened the load considerably, so it should be easier going for Apollo. I’ve never had a problem with finding enough food for him every day, and only pack supplements. All in all, a single horse is the best choice for my logistics, at least so far!
